Pueblos blancos

The surrounding area is dotted with the famous Pueblos Blancos – white villages whose sunlit lime-washed houses gleam like pearls in the mountains. The most famous route of these many villages runs along the border of Cádiz and Málaga provinces (where our finca is located), adjacent to the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park. The closest to us are Zahara de la Sierra, Grazalema, Setenil de las Bodegas, and El Gastor.

El Gastor, just three kilometres from Los Cantos, is particularly charming – even in the peak summer season, it remains quieter and more intimate than many others. In early August, this small mountain village comes to life with the Feria y Fiestas Mayores de El Gastor, a multi-day festival featuring the “suelta de vaquillas” (young bulls running through the streets) and the “Toro de fuego”, a “bull of fire” that runs through the village in a spectacular night show.

Each village is unique – some sit atop hills beside ancient ruins, others nestle between cliffs or are carved into the rock, like Setenil’s cave houses. You’ll find quiet squares, flower-covered balconies, artisan shops, and traditional tapas bars that offer an authentic local feel.

Many villages are also starting points for hiking trails and make perfect day trips where nature, culture, and cuisine come together in harmony. If you’re seeking authenticity, peace, and beauty, the “Pueblos Blancos”  are not to be missed.
